Thank you for your interest in the Saint Vincent de Paul Society. The Saint Vincent de Paul Society is an international association of lay men and women which was founded in Paris, France in 1833 by Frederick Ozanam and 5 fellow graduate students at the Sorbonne. In response to the criticism at that time that the Catholic Church was not doing enough for those in great need, they decided to” …do what Our Lord Jesus Christ did when preaching the gospel. Let us go to the poor!” This small society grew quickly and spread throughout the world.
We are proud to have an active Saint Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP) here in Saint Padre Pio Parish. This group (called a “conference”) is composed of adult lay men and women (called Vincentians”) who are committed to serving “friends in need” within our parish boundaries. We represent the merger of the former Our Lady of the Angels and Saint Maria Goretti conferences, and remain united in our prayerful commitment to those experiencing poverty. Over the past year (2024), the SVdP conference at St Padre Pio Parish provided financial assistance of $25,036 to 99 men, women, and children in our local community. These individuals and families were aided with utilities, housing costs, furniture, and transportation. Our mission was supported by donations of $25,638 from St Padre Pio parishioners, other Pittsburgh Diocesan SVdP conferences, local businesses, and anonymous donors
All adults are welcome to join our Saint Vincent de Paul conference. We meet every other Tuesday (twice a month) at 6:30 PM in the Parish House. As Vincentians we pray and reflect together while we seek to be the “hands and feet of Christ” in our community. We consider each need that is brought before us to discern the best way in which we can help. As Vincentians, we continually seek to strengthen our own spiritual growth as well as that of those we are privileged to assist. If you are already engaged in a form of charitable work, perhaps such as visiting the sick or the elderly, we would like to speak with you about what you are doing and how it might link to joining our SVDP conference.
To join our mission, to seek more information, or to donate, please call 412-628-2077. Prayers for our “friends in need” and the Society are always appreciated. Please also use the number above if you are in need and would like to talk to someone. We are happy to talk with you. If you are not in our parish boundaries, we will refer you to resources in your area.
